A Shooter is a defender who sprints ahead of the rest of the defensive line to make an interception or spot tackle (also called a ‘man and ball’ tackle) in hopes of recovering the ball. Typically, this is a massive risk because the integrity of the flat line is compromised and the hole left behind the shooter is an excellent place for the attacking team to achieve a linebreak. However, some teams have effectively used this player as a lone shooter, hanging out behind the line or placed in the line such that leaving it will not leave a significant gap. Much like a blitzing linebacker in American football, there is the chance to create a massive play or turnover in the defending team’s favour.
